On November 8, typhoon Yolanda swept across the Philippines leveling tens of thousands of homes, displacing 580, 000 people and leaving over 5,000 dead. Since then there has been a large response from many countries volunteering their time, skills and money. Samaritan’s Purse alone has brought in a 747 cargo aircraft to Cebu City carrying 3.6 million square feet of plastic sheeting, 6 community water filtration systems, bladder tanks and tap stands for water storage and distribution, medical supplies, mosquito nets, and blankets. They have also brought in 6,948 emergency supply kits, containing food and hygiene items. They have been distributing to families in affected areas. 9,596 tarps have been distributed to families living in damaged homes, and to provide shelter for children in local schools. Yet even with all this help, there is still much to do. It will take years for the Philippines to recover from this disaster.
This is why we are coordinating a trip to Cebu and the surrounding area in January 2014. We believe that a disaster such as this demands our response. Many have already given, prayed and even gone to the Philippines to help, but others are still looking and asking “What can I do?”
Please pray about joining us in January as we go. Here are the details:
