There is an estimated 153 million orphans world wide 1. More than 15 million of those have lost both parents due to HIV/AIDS.
We were talking about this the other day as a community and praying for orphans, and the families who adopt. James 1:27 tells us that “religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
Before we prayed for orphans to be placed in families, not into institutions, we watched this video called ‘I like adoption.’ We believe, as followers of Jesus that as we were adopted into the family of God, that we should be apart of adopting people into our families. This can look like foster care, adoption or even joining a big brother/big sister program. Check out this video and walk out the following steps:
- Pray for a family who is adopting
- Pray for a family who has adopted, pray for a great transition for the child and the family
- Call a family that you know has adopted and ask them what you can do to part for them, or encourage/help them
- Pray with your family and ask God what your next step is to be in the area of orphans and adoption/foster care
