Day 19- Missing women

Posted October 18th, 2012 in October Justice Awareness

Thirty-two years ago, on September 25, 1980, the Chinese government instituted a population control policy that prohibits almost all Chinese couples from having more than one child and forbids unmarried women from giving birth. Enforcement of the law has subjected Chinese women to forced abortions and involuntary sterilization and helped in tipping the country’s demography toward a dangerous gender imbalance. The outcome, a law that has resulted in almost 40 million “missing” women and some of the most egregious human rights violations in recent history. 1

60- 100 million women worldwide are demographically “missing.” More women are missing on the planet because they are female than men who were killed in all the wars in the 20th century. Women go missing as a result of:

  • sex selective abortion prominent throughout parts of asia
  • preferential medical treatment given to boys instead of girls

Our prayer is that God would put it in people’s hearts that all men and women are created equal and deserve the same treatment and rights.
